First deployment at an Ansan spine and joint specialty hospital… Smart monitoring infrastructure established across 90 beds
Enhancing patient safety through continuous monitoring from admission to recovery for spine and joint surgery patients
Daewoong Pharmaceutical announced on the 30th that it has supplied its AI-based smart bed monitoring system, 'thynC', to 90 beds at Class Hospital (Managing Director Lim Seok-min), establishing a smart ward environment that enables round-the-clock, real-time tracking of inpatients' vital signs.
Class Hospital is the first spine and joint specialty hospital in the Ansan region to adopt thynC. The system allows medical staff to continuously monitor the condition of spine and joint surgery patients from admission through recovery. The hospital has also introduced 'CART-ON', a ring-type continuous blood pressure monitor capable of 24-hour blood pressure tracking.
This deployment takes into account the specific recovery characteristics of spine and joint patients, such as the risk of postoperative complications, early ambulation, and rehabilitation. Elderly patients or those with underlying conditions such as hypertension and diabetes require careful monitoring for cardiac complications like arrhythmias following surgery. Medical teams must also watch for pulmonary embolisms—where blood clots caused by reduced mobility block pulmonary vessels—and respiratory depression associated with the use of opioid analgesics.
These complications often manifest first as electrocardiogram (ECG) abnormalities, elevated heart rates, decreased oxygen saturation, and changes in respiratory rate. Continuous tracking of key vital signs helps in the early detection of such warning signs. In particular, patients undergoing early ambulation and rehabilitation require ongoing status monitoring even while moving outside their beds.
thynC collects core vital signs in real time—including ECG, heart rate, oxygen saturation, and respiratory rate—via wireless wearable devices worn by patients. The gathered data is transmitted to the central monitor at the ward nursing station, allowing medical staff to oversee the status of multiple patients at a glance.
Because the system is wireless, monitoring continues seamlessly while patients move around their rooms or undergo rehabilitation therapy. If an anomaly is detected, it triggers an alert to the medical staff, facilitating a prompt response. Daewoong Pharmaceutical noted that the system also reduces the workload burden on medical staff associated with repeated nighttime vital sign checks, while minimizing disruptions to patient sleep.
Class Hospital specializes in joint and spine care, operating dedicated units including a Joint Center, Spine Endoscopy Center, Pediatric Orthopedic Center, and Sports Medical Center. Through collaborative care among orthopedic surgery, neurosurgery, and rehabilitation medicine departments, the hospital provides an integrated care continuum ranging from diagnosis and surgery to recovery and rehabilitation.
Lim Seok-min, Managing Director of Class Hospital, stated, "Safety management during the postoperative recovery process is paramount in spine and joint surgeries. With the introduction of thynC, our inpatients can now receive treatment in an environment with 24-hour monitoring, and we will continue to evolve into a patient-centric smart hospital."
Park Hyung-chul, head of Daewoong Pharmaceutical’s ETC Marketing Division, said, "By supplying thynC to Class Hospital, we have established a smart ward environment that enables 24-hour tracking of vital signs for spine and joint surgery patients from admission to recovery. We will continue to expand this smart hospital model—which enhances both patient safety and clinical efficiency through thynC—to regional medical institutions."
Building on the adoption of thynC, Class Hospital plans to systematically advance the digital transformation of its overall ward operations.
