US Employment Falls Well Short of Estimates… Odds of October Rate Freeze Rise to 77%
Blue-Chip Stocks Rally Broadly Amid Oil Price Drop… MSCI Korea Index Up 3.1%
Key Market Trends
① September Payrolls at 29,000… Significantly Below Expectations
US non-farm payrolls increased by 29,000 in September, falling far short of the market consensus of 85,000.
August employment figures were also revised downward from 162,000 to 133,000.
Hourly earnings rose 0.1% month-on-month and 3.0% year-on-year, both missing market expectations of 0.3% and 3.2%, respectively.
As employment and wage growth slow, the probability of an October rate freeze according to FedWatch climbed to 77%.
However, temporary factors such as an uptick in labor force participation, the Labor Day holiday, and delayed start dates for the new academic year were also cited, shifting the market interpretation toward easing rate pressures rather than an abrupt economic contraction.
② Oil Prices Fall on Strategic Reserve Release Reports… Middle East Tensions Persist
International oil prices declined following reports that the G7 would release 100 million barrels of crude and diesel.
This came on top of recent increases in Middle Eastern crude supply, alongside liquefied natural gas (LNG) shipments passing through the Strait of Hormuz hitting a monthly high since the onset of the conflict.
WTI crude plummeted nearly 5% during intraday trading at one point.
However, losses were pared to close down 1.9% following reports of a potential Houthi attack on Saudi Arabia.
With expanding Middle Eastern supply and geopolitical tensions running concurrently, volatility in oil prices is expected to persist.
③ 'Magnificent Seven' Rally in Unison… AI and Semiconductors Show Strength
The top eight US market capitalization stocks all advanced, driving the broader indices higher.
Nvidia hit a new all-time intraday high during the session.
Bank of America raised its 2030 data center market forecast from $1.8 trillion to $2.2 trillion.
Boosted by expectations of expanding AI investment, related equities such as Nvidia, Intel, Marvell, and Lam Research traded strongly.
Tesla also advanced after reporting third-quarter vehicle deliveries of 486,532 units, beating the market consensus of 463,761.
Market Takeaways
U.S. equity markets interpreted the sluggish employment data not as a recession signal, but as a welcome development that reduces the burden of interest rate hikes. With wage growth also coming in lower than anticipated, expectations for a Federal Reserve rate freeze in October have strengthened further.
The decline in oil prices also proved favorable for the stock market. Increased crude supplies from the Middle East, compounded by reports of a strategic petroleum reserve release, helped alleviate inflationary pressures. Nonetheless, ongoing military tensions in the Middle East warrant close monitoring to determine whether oil prices will achieve lasting stability.
In the tech sector, AI investment sentiment has re-emerged in the spotlight. Nvidia touched record highs during the session, and data center investment projections were revised upward. Sentiment surrounding semiconductor investments, which gained momentum following Micron’s earnings, appears to be broadening across the entire AI infrastructure landscape.
Although the domestic Korean market is currently closed for holidays, the MSCI Korea Index advanced 3.1% and overnight futures rose 1.25%. Following the holiday break, key factors to watch will be how US interest rate trajectories, oil price movements, and the strength in AI and semiconductors translate into supply and demand dynamics for major domestic stocks, including Samsung Electronics and SK hynix.
