[Market Brief] October 16: CoreWeave Recovers as Jensen Huang Voices "Optimism"

CoreWeave bonds and shares rebounded after CEO Jensen Huang expressed optimism, easing concerns over the company's financial health. Meanwhile, U.S. 10-year Treasury yields dropped to 5.08% despite hotter-than-expected PPI data, as domestic markets continue to grapple with forced liquidations of credit-financed positions.

CoreWeave corporate bonds recover to 80-cent range; stock rebounds 6% as Jensen Huang signals optimism.

U.S. 10-year yields fall to 5.08%; overnight futures climb 3.91% while domestic market faces persistent margin call pressure.

Key Market Trends

① CoreWeave Fear Subsides: Bonds and Stocks Rally

Concerns over CoreWeave’s financial stability, which rattled the markets yesterday, have begun to subside.

The price of its 2032 corporate bonds recovered from the high 70s to the low 80s, while its stock price gained nearly 6%.

Bank of America raised its sales revenue growth forecast for the company from 102% to 105% for next year, and from 58% to 63% for 2027, citing its massive power supply capacity as a key competitive edge and setting a target price of $140.

Deutsche Bank also maintained its "buy" rating and $150 price target, noting that the company faces no short-term liquidity issues and continues to expand its business.

With Nvidia holding approximately 10% of CoreWeave, CEO Jensen Huang expressed his "optimism" regarding the company, explaining that lower financing costs are helping to improve its financial health.

② PPI Surpasses Forecasts, Yet Bond Yields Retreat to 5.08%

The U.S. Producer Price Index (PPI) for September rose 1.3% month-on-month and 6.3% year-on-year, significantly exceeding market expectations of 0.6% and 5.3%, respectively.

Core PPI also exceeded expectations, rising 0.7% month-on-month and 5.0% year-on-year, compared to forecasts of 0.3% and 4.4%.

Over 80% of the commodity price increase was driven by energy costs.

Despite the high inflation data, Treasury yields did not rise; rather, they fell sharply, likely reflecting a flight-to-safety as market volatility prompted investors to rotate into government bonds.

The U.S. 10-year Treasury yield dropped to 5.08%.

③ Semiconductors Recover from Mid-Day Plunge; Micron Turns Positive

Semiconductor stocks faced heavy selling pressure early in the session amid lingering concerns over the sustainability of AI investments and a potential memory supply glut.

Elon Musk’s comments regarding the potential for China to expand RAM production by 2028 also kept investors wary of memory competition from China.

Conversely, Dan Ives of Wedbush argued that fundamental AI demand remains robust and viewed the recent sell-off as a buying opportunity.

By the afternoon, bargain hunting in the tech sector helped semiconductor stocks recoup their losses.

Micron reversed its early weakness to close 1.9% higher, and the SK hynix ADR, which at one point plummeted nearly 6%, significantly narrowed its losses.

While Nvidia, Apple, Broadcom, Meta, and Tesla finished lower, Microsoft, Amazon, and Alphabet ended the session in positive territory.

Market Commentary

The KOSPI has fallen by as much as 24% from its intra-day highs over the past seven trading sessions. Much like the sell-off in July, investor sentiment has been severely dampened by a rapid concentration of negative news regarding semiconductors, interest rates, and Middle East tensions.

At that time, rumors regarding reduced memory allocation for Nvidia’s next-gen chips, speculation about Apple using Chinese-made semiconductors, and concerns over the technological catching-up by Chinese equipment manufacturers dominated the headlines. Similar themes—namely CoreWeave’s financial troubles, CXMT’s progress, and doubts over AI investment sustainability—are driving the current trend.

The biggest burden right now is technical supply and demand. Recently, we have seen an increase in forced liquidation orders during simultaneous call auctions, and the balance of credit-based margin loans fell by approximately 550 billion won in a single day as of the 14th. This indicates that we are entering a phase of serious deleveraging of credit-financed positions.

However, corporate earnings outlooks have not significantly deteriorated during this recent slide. CoreWeave, for instance, has seen its bond prices recover, and major brokerage firms have actually raised their sales revenue forecasts. The index’s drop of nearly 1,500 points in a short period is also significant when compared to actual changes in corporate fundamentals.

While supply-demand imbalances persist, making it difficult to declare an end to volatility, this level of overselling suggests we may see frequent attempts at a rebound. It is essential to closely monitor the performance of established market leaders and large-cap stocks that have undergone the deepest corrections.

Today’s Checkpoints
