Morning Briefing: AI Stocks Flicker Back to Life as Anthropic Secures $63B Financing

Investor sentiment toward artificial intelligence received a major boost following a $63 billion financing package for Anthropic. Semiconductors surged 3.5% overnight, while West Texas Intermediate (WTI) crude slipped back below the $100 threshold ahead of the Federal Open Market Committee (FOMC) meeting.

Anthropic's $63B Funding Eases AI Investment Concerns

Semiconductors Jump 3.5%; Oil Drops Below $100

Key Market Trends

① $63 Billion Backing for Anthropic Restores AI Investment Conviction

Market sentiment toward artificial intelligence rebounded sharply following reports that a consortium of financial institutions has arranged a $63 billion financing package to support Anthropic’s technology procurement.

The funding structure involves major institutions—including Bank of America, Citi, Morgan Stanley, and Blackstone—providing capital for Anthropic to purchase Broadcom technology and lease Tensor Processing Units (TPUs). Reports indicate the arrangement includes a clause where Broadcom acts as a guarantor in the event of loan defaults.

Anthropic’s improving revenue profile also drew market attention. The share of revenue generated outside its top five customers climbed from 64% in the first quarter to 79%, while its infrastructure expenditure relative to revenue dropped sharply from 201% in the first half of last year to 55%.

According to Evercore, all of the top 10 Fortune 500 companies now allocate budget to Anthropic, with more than half of the broader Fortune 500 spending over $100,000 annually. This suggests AI technology adoption is broadening well beyond early-adopter enterprises.

Meanwhile, Meta’s $25 billion stock offering drew more than five times oversubscription. A succession of recent large-scale capital raises has helped alleviate persistent market anxieties regarding the long-term sustainability of AI infrastructure spending.

② Semiconductors Rally 3.5%; Buying Resumes in AI Equities

Bolstered by renewed enthusiasm for AI capital expenditures, the semiconductor sector jumped 3.5%, spearheading a broader market rebound.

Broadcom advanced roughly 4% amid expectations of benefiting from Anthropic's commercial expansion and capital deployment, while major chipmakers such as AMD, Intel, and Micron also posted strong gains.

Nvidia received a boost from news of expanded AI collaboration with Meta, alongside a $3.0 billion strategic investment in the latest funding round. The two companies have agreed to jointly develop customized AI model product lines.

Wall Street trading patterns through October have been characterized by a distinct rotation out of semiconductors and into defensive sectors like consumer staples. Prior to this session, the semiconductor sector had retreated 12% for the month, while energy and consumer staples had gained 13% and 9%, respectively.

Argent Capital noted that the market has experienced a recurring cycle of heightened AI anxiety followed by aggressive bargain-hunting, observing that the "buy switch" for the sector has effectively been flipped back on.

③ WTI Slips Below $100; Treasury Yields Hold Steady Ahead of FOMC

International crude benchmarks retreated, with WTI falling 1.83% to settle at $99.90 per barrel.

Despite Houthi attacks on Saudi petroleum infrastructure, remarks from Iranian officials signaling openness to dialogue helped ease geopolitical tensions in the Middle East, pulling oil prices lower.

U.S. Treasury yields remained stable with minimal movement ahead of the Federal Reserve's policy decision. The benchmark 10-year Treasury yield hovered at 4.99%, remaining safely below the critical 5% threshold.

BNY expects the FOMC to pause rate hikes at this meeting, though policymakers are unlikely to completely rule out the possibility of future tightening. Markets remain hyper-focused on the Federal Reserve's forward guidance regarding future policy trajectories rather than the rate decision itself.

Market Strategist's Perspective

Recent equity market action has flashed several classic oversold signals. Earlier in the week, both the KOSPI and KOSDAQ entered oversold territory based on the Advance-Decline Ratio (ADR). Last week, the proportion of KOSPI-listed stocks trading above their 200-day moving averages dropped below 20%—historically, major market bottoms have coincided with this indicator falling into the 10% to 20% range.

In dollar-adjusted terms, the KOSPI has retreated toward its 60-week moving average. Given that AI has served as the primary macroeconomic and earnings catalyst over the past year, current market levels represent a critical juncture for assessing whether the underlying AI investment cycle remains intact.

Significant hurdles remain. Investors must navigate the risks of potential hawkish signaling from the FOMC, ongoing geopolitical flashpoints in the Middle East, and potential profit-taking following forthcoming earnings reports from tech giants like Samsung Electronics and SK hynix.

Conversely, the recent sharp sell-off has substantially compressed valuations across individual equities. It remains prudent to closely monitor previous market leaders, industries undergoing accelerated capital expenditure, and stocks that managed to attract institutional accumulation even during the early-October downturn.
