Alphabet Loses $500B in Market Cap as AI Spending and Cash Flow Anxieties Spark Tech Sell-Off

Alphabet plunged 12%, erasing $500 billion in market value in a single session, as mounting AI capital expenditure and slowing search growth triggered a heavy sell-off in mega-cap technology stocks. However, broader market breadth remained resilient with cyclical and defensive sectors advancing.

Alphabet Plunges 12% on Renewed AI Spending and Cash Flow Concerns

Broad Sell-Off Concentrated in Mega-Cap Tech; Advancing Sectors Outnumber Decliners

Key Market Trends

① Alphabet Slumps 12%, Vaporizing $500 Billion in Market Cap

Disappointing earnings and heavy capital expenditures for artificial intelligence at Alphabet weighed heavily on technology shares.

Revenue came in at $127.57 billion, missing the market consensus of $128.2 billion, while earnings per share stood at $2.12, falling short of the estimated $3.03. Free cash flow swung to a deficit of $9.07 billion, worsening from a deficit of $5.855 billion in the previous quarter.

Alphabet maintained its annual capital expenditure guidance at $195 billion to $205 billion. What rattled investors was not merely the scale of AI investments, but slowing growth in the core search business alongside deteriorating cash flow. As the monetization of AI search lags behind traditional search, mounting a massive capital outlay while the core business decelerates intensifies financial burdens.

Alphabet shares plummeted over 12%, with its intraday market capitalization loss peaking at $524 billion—marking the second-largest single-day market cap wipeout in history following Nvidia in 2025.

Nevertheless, the broader market did not collapse. Eight sectors, including real estate, healthcare, and consumer staples, advanced, while only three sectors—communication services, technology, and consumer discretionary—finished lower. Across the entire exchange, advancing stocks vastly outnumbered decliners.

② Amazon Slides After Hours as Markets Prioritize Earnings Velocity Over AI Growth

Microsoft held up relatively well, bolstered by earnings that beat expectations and strong Azure growth. Azure's growth rate for the coming quarter is projected at 49% to 50%, roughly 4 percentage points above consensus, with capital expenditures coming in $50 billion lower than anticipated.

However, as the sell-off originating from Alphabet spread, Microsoft also edged lower, pressured in part by reports of a planned $25 billion corporate bond issuance.

After the market close, Amazon reported earnings that missed expectations. Revenue reached $201.9 billion, missing the $202.3 billion estimate, and earnings per share were $1.89, below the expected $1.96. Its stock tumbled sharply in after-hours trading.

AWS revenue hit $45.9 billion, topping forecasts. While both Alphabet and Amazon are expanding their AI and cloud businesses, market scrutiny has heightened, demanding concurrent confirmation of core business strength, profitability, and cash flow generation.

Weighed down by Alphabet's weakness, semiconductor stocks and AI-linked infrastructure plays such as CoreWeave and Nebius also traded lower in tandem.

③ PCE In Line, Yields Slide, and Non-Tech Equities Remain Robust

September PCE inflation rose 3.6% year-over-year and 0.5% month-over-month, meeting expectations. Core PCE advanced 3.1% and 0.3%, respectively. Although inflation climbed to its highest level since May, it remained within anticipated ranges.

Third-quarter GDP growth printed at 3.4%, beating the market consensus of 3.2%.

The FOMC was viewed as exhibiting patience rather than leaning into a tighter bias, signaling a preference to evaluate additional incoming data. The U.S. 10-year Treasury yield slipped to 4.94%, bolstered by safe-haven demand stemming from the tech sector downturn.

Crude oil fell 0.76% to $102 amid ongoing diplomatic dialogue surrounding Iran.

Underneath the headline indices, internal market health was sounder. While mega-cap AI stocks stumbled, small-cap stocks and defensive sectors gained ground. Baird pointed to small-cap strength to argue that the pullback should not be interpreted as systemic damage to the broader market.

Market Strategist's View

Most major domestic and international events for the week have now passed. Domestically, we have digested earnings reports from Samsung Electronics and SK hynix; internationally, we have navigated the FOMC, Big Tech earnings, and PCE data.

The earnings from Samsung Electronics and SK hynix helped alleviate recent concerns regarding a peak in the memory cycle. The FOMC outcome also largely aligned with expectations. Since the market has already priced in roughly three additional rate hikes through the end of next year, the meeting did little to radically alter existing forecasts.

Recently, the stock market has been amplifying volatility by repeatedly recycling familiar themes. Following funding concerns for AI firms and the growth of Chinese tech companies, Alphabet and Amazon's earnings and capital expenditure pressures have now provided a pretext for a correction. Domestically, disappointment regarding Samsung Electronics' shareholder return policies has also exerted an influence.

Samsung Electronics' shareholder returns have not been abandoned; rather, their specific execution timeline has been delayed. Given that treasury stock disclosures followed roughly three weeks after earnings announcements in the previous quarter, subsequent announcements warrant close monitoring.

AI and semiconductors are also transitioning into a phase where stocks no longer move in lockstep, but instead diverge based on earnings and cash flows. While volatility may persist, the recent sharp pullbacks suggest it is time to monitor shifts in supply and demand, focusing on established market leaders and high-performing stocks with verified earnings.
